What the preview is and who controls it
When you paste a link into WhatsApp, the app fetches the page and reads a few tags that the page's owner has placed in it, the Open Graph tags. These give the title, a short description and an image. The same tags are used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and others. If they are missing or the image cannot be fetched, the chat shows a plain link.
This means the preview is controlled by whoever built the invitation page, not by you. As the person sharing, you can test and resend. As the person ordering, you can ask for the checks below before you approve the link.
The usual causes, in order of likelihood
- The preview image is too large. There is no official WhatsApp specification, but in practice previews are reliably shown for images under about 300 KB, and a large file can cause no preview at all, even when the dimensions are right.
- The image address is not a full web address. It should be a complete HTTPS address, not a relative path.
- The page has no preview tags, or has duplicate ones that confuse the parser.
- The image cannot be fetched without a login, or is blocked for automated visitors.
- The page itself is slow, or asks the visitor to log in, so the fetch times out.
- WhatsApp is showing a stored older copy of the link from before you fixed it.
The 300 KB figure is an observed practical limit reported by developers, not a published rule, and it can change. Treat it as a safe target.
A good preview image
- Size: 1200 by 630 pixels is the common standard and works across most apps.
- File: a compressed JPG or PNG, kept well under about 300 KB.
- Content: the couple's names and a few words, large and legible even at thumbnail size. Do not rely on small text.
- Safe area: keep names away from the edges, since some apps crop.
- Address: a full HTTPS web address that opens without a login.
- Declared size: the page should also say the image's width and height, which helps some apps lay out the preview.
What you can do as the person sharing
- Send the link to yourself or a test chat first, before the whole family.
- If it shows no picture, wait a minute and try again, then ask the person who built the page to check the image.
- If you have fixed the page and WhatsApp still shows the old preview, it may be cached. Adding a harmless extra part to the end of the link, such as a question mark and a number, makes WhatsApp treat it as new. This is a workaround, not a fix.
- Do not rely on a different app's debug tool alone. A preview that works on Facebook can still fail on WhatsApp, which has its own limits.
- Put the link on its own line in the message, with the warm note above it.
What to ask whoever is building your invitation
A good studio tests the preview as part of delivery. You can ask for it in plain words: show me how the link looks when pasted into WhatsApp, and confirm it does so on iPhone and Android.
- Does every invitation link have its own title, description and image?
- Is the preview image under about 300 KB and 1200 by 630 pixels?
- Is the image address a full HTTPS address that loads without a login?
- Have you tested it in WhatsApp on iPhone and Android?
- If I change the invitation, how does the preview update?
Privacy and previews
A preview is visible to everyone who receives the message, and a private invitation can still show one. Keep addresses and phone numbers out of the title and description. The couple's names and a warm line are enough. The wedding website privacy checklist covers more.
If you also print the link on the card, see adding a QR code to a printed wedding card. A QR code opens the page directly and does not use the preview at all, so it is a good backup for guests who see only a plain link.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Why does my wedding invitation link show no picture on WhatsApp?
Usually the preview image is too large, missing, not a full HTTPS address, or blocked, or WhatsApp is showing an old stored copy. Try a smaller image, check the address and resend with a small change to the link.
What size should a WhatsApp link preview image be?
There is no official rule. 1200 by 630 pixels is the common standard, and keeping the file well under about 300 KB is the safest practical target.
How do I refresh a WhatsApp preview I have already fixed?
WhatsApp can cache previews. Adding a harmless extra part to the link, such as a question mark and a number, makes it fetch the page again.
Does a noindex page still show a preview?
Yes. Noindex affects search engines only. A private invitation can still show a preview, so keep sensitive details out of the title and description.
Can I make the preview show the couple's photo?
Yes, if the page sets that image as its preview image. Use a compressed, high-contrast picture with the names on it, and test it in a chat before sharing widely.
